How to Properly Water Your Lawn on the Gulf Coast

Hot, humid summers in Mobile and Baldwin Counties create unique challenges for homeowners. Between intense heat, sandy soil, and high humidity, improper watering can lead to fungus, insect pressure, and weak root systems.

Here’s how to water your lawn correctly in South Alabama.

#1 - Water Early in the Morning

Watering should be completed before 8:00 AM during hot months.

Early watering:

  • Reduces evaporation

  • Prevents fungal growth

  • Minimizes insect attraction

  • Allows grass blades to dry during the day

Evening watering increases the risk of thatch buildup, lawn disease, and pest activity.

#2 - Deep Soaking Is Better Than Frequent Light Watering

Frequent, shallow watering keeps roots near the surface — making your lawn weaker and more vulnerable to drought stress.

Instead:

  • Water deeply

  • Apply about ½ inch at a time

  • Allow soil to absorb moisture fully

Deep root systems are critical for Gulf Coast lawns.

#3 - Different Grass Types Have Different Needs

In Mobile and Baldwin Counties, common turf types include:

  • Zoysia: 1½–2 inches per week

  • Centipede: About 1 inch per week

  • St. Augustine: About 1 inch per week

  • Bermuda: 1–1½ inches per week

Adjust watering based on rainfall and soil conditions.

#4 - Check Your Sprinkler Efficiency

Many lawns are overwatered simply because irrigation systems are uneven.

We recommend performing a simple “tuna can test” to measure output (see our detailed guide here → link to second blog post).

Did You Know?

The EPA reports that up to 50% of outdoor water use is wasted due to inefficient watering systems.

Smart watering not only protects your lawn — it reduces waste and long-term maintenance costs.
