How to Measure Your Sprinkler System’s Water Output (The Tuna Can Test Guide)
Many Gulf Coast lawn problems are caused not by lack of water — but uneven watering.
If one section of your yard receives too much water while another gets too little, you may see fungus, thinning grass, or patchy growth.
Here’s how to measure your sprinkler system properly.
Supplies You’ll Need
An empty tuna can (about 1 inch tall)
Or any flat-bottom container
Measuring tape or ruler
A timer or clock
Step #1 - Set Up Containers
Place 2–3 containers in a straight line from the sprinkler head outward.
This helps determine if water distribution is consistent across the zone.
Step #2 - Run the System
Turn on the irrigation system for 15 -20 minutes.
This gives you a measurable baseline.
Step #3 - Measure Each Container
Check how much water collected in each can.
If one can has significantly more or less water, your sprinkler may need adjustment.
Step #4 - Calculate Watering Time
Example: If you collect ¼ inch in 15 minutes, that equals ½ inch in 30 minutes.
Adjust runtime to reach your weekly watering target.
Why This Matters on the Gulf Coast?
Sandy soils in Mobile and Baldwin Counties drain quickly.
Uneven watering leads to:
Potential for lawn disease
"Hot spots" or dry spots from uneven watering coverage
Weak turf roots
Higher water bills
Measuring output helps prevent these issues.
